Masami Ogata is a survivor of Minamata Disease, a debilitating illness caused by industrial mercury poisoning, which originated in the Japanese town of the same name in the 1950s. As a UN conference on preventing future poisoning outbreaks gets underway, we hear Mr. Ogata’s story from COP4.
In the 3rd anniversary of the Minamata Convention on Mercury (COP)3, the victims of the Minamata Disease send their true voices, so such a story will not happen again.
Mr. Koichiro Matsunaga and Ms. Shinobu Sakamoto both were exposed to mercury in the womb speaking on behalf of all Minamata victims from the (COP3) Minamata Convention on Mercury November, 2018 call to end mercury poisoning and #MakeMercuryHistory.
December 17, 2020, UK Super Mega Rock Star @robbiewilliams reported he 'almost died’ from mercury poisoning over his seafood habit. He had the highest level of mercury in his body ever recorded in UK.
Approximately 18 - 20 million impoverished artisanal and small-scale gold (ASG) miners all largely having undiagnosed mercury poisonings in ~ 80 countries dangerously toil daily to produce ~20% of the world’s gold supply using mercury, a deadly neurotoxin to make gold for our jewellery, our iPads, our iPhones, computers, and other e-devices releasing 2,000 tonnes of mercury to our environment annually.
The morbid irony is the same mercury used to extract the gold is polluting the air we all breathe, contaminating our drinking water, polluting the Oceans we swim, poisoning the fish we consume causing health issues, and global biodiversity destruction.
A Solution; the use of "manipueira" bitter cassava plant-based extract, an option to replace mercury used in ore processing.
