A Fragile Stage: Air Pollution's Impact on Newborns

Exposure to outdoor (ambient) and indoor (household) particulate air pollution places our youngest infants at increased health risk.
A new report from the State of Global Air found that in 2019, nearly 500,000 newborns globally died within the first month of life, most from exposure to household air pollution.
Learn how a mother’s exposure to air pollution contributes to low birth weight and preterm birth weight, which can affect her newborn’s susceptibility to diseases, like lower respiratory infections and survival.
While the biological reasons for the linkage between air pollution and adverse birth outcomes are not fully known, it is thought that air pollution may affect a pregnant woman, her developing fetus, or both in ways analogous to tobacco smoking, which is a well-known risk factor for low birth weight and preterm birth.
